New Zealand footballer Michael Joseph Boxall, born on 18 August 1988, currently plays for Minnesota United in Major League Soccer and represents the New Zealand national football team.
Boxall attended and worked at Mount Albert Grammar School during high school. He played a crucial role as a defensive anchor, helping Mount Albert win league titles in 2004 and 2005, as well as the 2005 national championship.
In 2006, Boxall became the team captain for the senior season. Under his leadership, the team secured their second Knockout Cup victory in three years and competed in the Auckland Secondary School Football Association Championship. Mount Albert finished second in the national championship that year.
Boxall has played for several teams in New Zealand, including Ellerslie AFC, Three Kings United, Central United, and Auckland City FC. He led Central United to the Lotto Sports Italia NRFL title in 2007 and won the NZFC title with Auckland City. He was named Young Player of the Year in 2006 and 2007 with Central United and Auckland City FC, respectively.
After being scouted by head coach Tim Vom Steeg, Boxall joined the University of California, Santa Barbara for varsity football. In his first season, he appeared in 12 games, starting 10 of them. Despite a knee injury cutting his season short, he was recognized as the top all-rookie player in 10 starts.
Boxall was drafted as the 1st overall pick by Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the 2011 MLS Extra Draft. He made his professional debut in March 2011 but was released by the Whitecaps in June 2012. He then joined New Zealand side Wellington Phoenix on a two-year deal.
Boxall has represented New Zealand at various international levels, including the Junior All-Whites (U-20s) and the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup. In June 2023, the New Zealand team walked out of an international friendly against Qatar due to an alleged incident of racial abuse against Boxall.
Boxall is married to Libby Boxall, who is a blogger, founder of Doseandco, and a Nutritionist & Naturopath. They have two children named Maxwell and Beau.
